The success of the Chico Mendes Reforestation Project relies heavily on volunteer work, since the Project only retains four year-round employees. Here at the Project, there are many different tasks to be done, and we will strive to match your skill sets with our currents needs.
Work varies depending on the season, but below are the activities available to volunteers throughout the year.
- Soil Preparation
- Seedling maintenance
- Watering and weeding
For our volunteers, we offer an affordable home-stay option with a local family in the Pachaj community. The home-stay includes three traditional Guatemalan meals a day with a vegetarian or vegan option if desired. Volunteers are also welcome to participate in cultural events and Mayan ceremonies with their family when applicable. The host families typically do not speak English but are accustomed to accommodating volunteers who speak other languages.
